What I learned being a judge for the Edurank Awards

Estimated read time: 4 minutes

You’re probably aware that we’re in the middle of awards season, including some we’ve been directly involved with. That’s right, the BAFTAs were to the left of me, the Oscars to the right and yet here I am, stuck in the middle with the Edurank Awards.

The Edurank celebration was freshened up for 2018, with the introduction of a few judged categories to go alongside those that are determined purely by the data. I was one of those tasked with judging the new categories and, boy, was it fun!

You can check out the full list of award winners and highly commended entries over on the Edurank blog. But, for the rest of this post, I wanted to reflect on what being a judge taught me.

Wow, you guys!

First up, there is so much good stuff happening in the sector that it was a genuine pleasure to get to read through the entries and discover all these wonderful campaigns and projects. I was expecting the quality of entries to be high and you certainly did not disappoint.

In many ways, you’re all winners – I mean, obviously, you’re not all winners but, y’know, good job everyone.

Variety is the spice of life…and these awards

Across the four judged categories we saw an incredible range of ideas – from personalised videos and alumni tales of love, through to groundbreaking apps, Star Wars and, erm, tunnels for geese…these awards had it all.

I loved the fact that every entry was so different. It let me, as a judge, feel like I got to know your institution a little better. It also went to show that, if you’ve got something you’re proud of, you should definitely put it forward for next year’s awards!

Being a judge is hard, really hard

I didn’t think judging these awards would be easy – not at all – but it was still lot harder than I expected. Across the judging panel, we were all drawn to different things and the discussions where each of us made our points was really fun to be part of – far more so than if we’d all agreed from the start!

Credit has to go here to the Edurank team for pulling together a diverse judging panel – good job!

Seeing your pleasure at winning is ace

Since the awards arrived at their winning institutions last week, we’ve seen plenty of excitement from the winners on social media. As a judge, seeing you lot happy makes me happy, so this last week has been smiles all round!

Same time next year?

To quote the Foo Fighters, ‘done, done, onto the next one’ – I’m already excited to see who triumphs in 2019, regardless of whether or not I’m lucky enough to be a judge again, and I hope plenty of you consider entering.

Who knows, it could be you!

Over the coming weeks and months we’re planning to chat to plenty of the winners from the Edurank Awards here on The Native to build up a bank of cracking case studies. As such, it’s probably a good idea that you sign up for our newsletter so you don’t miss out on hearing what the winners have to say!
