UPDATE, Tuesday 2 October 2018: You can now submit your podcast to Spotify directly at this wonderful portal! Yes, it means the fabulous article below is now redundant…but, hey! Spotify! Woo!

(Even better, Spotify are offering you stats too!)

So, Spotify.

If ever you wanted to check its influence in all things audio, Spotify is already the second-largest provider of podcasts, behind Apple. In fact, Spotify currently accounts for 5% of all podcasts downloaded anywhere.

Not only is Spotify a big name, but them getting involved in the podcast space removes a potential barrier to entry into the medium. People already know how to use Spotify, so it should make it easier for new listeners to find shows. Oh, and there’s the fact that you can very easily share stuff from Spotify to other spaces – social sharing for podcasts! Finally!

With all that in mind, you probably want your show on there. And we can totally see why.

However, it’s not as simple as it is to get your show into other spaces. But, it is doable – if you want to know how…read on.

Don’t worry about your RSS feed

Whereas your RSS feed is the key to submitting your podcast to Apple, Acast, Podbean, Stitcher etc, it’s not the case for Spotify.

Instead of submitting your feed to Spotify, you have to know the right people. Namely, the right hosting companies.

Be in the right club

That’s right, Spotify prefers to talk to hosting companies rather than individual podcasters.

So, to get on Spotify (currently) your show needs to be hosted on one of the following platforms:

If you host your show yourself, you don’t really have many options at the moment. Although, some of the companies above will offer you incentives to move your show over to them. In fact, Buzzsprout even lets you bump your show over to them for free.

Play by the rules

If you’re ready to submit a show to Spotify, make sure you don’t have any copyrighted material in your podcast, otherwise Spotify won’t list it. If you use any music in your episodes, make sure it is podsafe.

Keep your eyes peeled

Unlike Apple Podcasts, Spotify won’t call or email when your show is approved. Basically, you’ve just got to keep searching – it usually takes around 2-5 days for your show to appear.
